Discuss Contemporary German Literature

Three times a year, I head up a German reading group through the Waterloo Centre for German Studies. The title we choose is usually available in both English and German, the language of our discussion depends on those who attend. It doesn’t matter, therefore, if you’re fluent in German, only understand it, or only know “Gemütlichkeit” because of Oktoberfest. If you’re interested in reading contemporary German literature, even if it’s in translation, you’re welcome to join us.

April’s Reading Selection:

Dörte Hansen: Altes Land / This House is Mine, trans. Anne Stokes

“After the war, expellees from the East came to Northern Germany. Nowadays, it’s the people who have fled the big cities. Dörte Hansen tells of a traditional farming region which has offered refuge for generations.”

Need to get the book? Try these options:

German: Kobo, Amazon, Kindle

English: Kobo, Amazon

Meeting Logistics

We order some food, though never enough for a full meal for the group. Each attendee must pay for their own book. The location for this meeting is still TBD, but it will be somewhere central, with easy bus access, in Kitchener or Waterloo.
