Austin scrutinized the giant animal towering above him. “He doesn’t have a red nose, so it’s not Rudolph. But what are the others? I can’t remember the names."

“Why don’t we ask him?” Richard suggested. Austin nodded and Claire and Richard began naming off each reindeer from ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. Her daughter shook her head and hammed up the lack of recognition, but once Claire said “Cupid,” the tall reindeer punched her arms in the air and launched into a football-style victory dance, the bell on her collar ringing with joy.

Austin clapped again in excitement. The music over the speakers changed to “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” and Austin led the reindeer in another ballet dance.

Pauline’s transformation from chatty daughter into mime the moment she stepped into costume had always amazed Claire. Over the years, her daughter had donned many costumes: a beer bottle for a corporation, the ice-skating fox for the Kitchener Blizzard hockey team, and Onkel Hans, the mascot for Kitchener’s annual Oktoberfest were just a few. Pauline loved it every time.

She can do back flips and climb thirty-foot ladders in costumes like that, Claire thought, get entire stadiums on their feet, visit children in hospitals, but when she has to take a big leap for herself, she’s always too scared to go for it.

About Lori Wolf-Heffner

Across the tracks and up a set of cement stairs from Lori's grandmother’s home was Belmont Village, a quaint shopping district with restaurants, a drug store, a convenience store, and several small businesses. The neighbourhood for Lori means family and romance, which is why she's set both her young adult and romance series there.

Lori is also a former competitive dancer, dance teacher, and theatre manager, and was a member of the first Canadian National Tap Team, back in 1996, under the leadership of Bonnie Dyer, with choreographer Matthew Clark. Dance took Lori to competitions all over Southern Ontario, into the US, to Disney World, and to Germany. She has many fond memories of performing with her dance team.

And that's why she uses dance as a backdrop in many of her stories.
Oh! And she's also spent a day in Luxembourg and 15 minutes in Switzerland, and she can still do cartwheels.
