Postcards from Behind the Iron Curtain Inspire Fiction Series
Waterloo, ON—Local author Lori Wolf-Heffner likes the number 360. “It’s complete,” she says. Holding the launch of her book Between Worlds 5: Hide and Seek at Trillium Lutheran Church in Waterloo equals 360, because the congregation of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church worships there.
Wolf-Heffner’s earliest memory of St. Mark’s was her grandfather’s funeral when she was almost nine. “I knew my grandfather wouldn’t come back,” she says, “but I didn’t know how I would move on. I couldn’t see the future without him.”
That began to change about 20 years ago, when Wolf-Heffner discovered old postcards in her grandmother’s closet. They were from her grandfather’s mother, Katharina Wolf, who had been trapped behind the Iron Curtain. They opened an unknown past for Wolf-Heffner. Katharina Wolf became the inspiration for Elisabeth Schuhmacher, one of the two teens at the centre of Between Worlds.
The series follows 14-year-old Juliana today in the Belmont neighbourhood of Kitchener and Elisabeth, her great-grandmother, at age 14, right after WWI, in Eastern Europe. They’re connected through an old sketchbook in which Elisabeth recorded the year 1920 for her father, who was working in America.
“Having this book launch at my grandfather’s church is the future with him,” says Wolf-Heffner. “His mother’s family was important to her, so she shared what she could from Romania. And holding a happy event at the church—one inspired by my grandfather’s family—will bring everything 360 for me.”
The book launch takes place on Monday, November 25th, from 7-8:30 PM at Trillium Lutheran Church, 22 Willow St., in Waterloo. Wolf-Heffner promises “no droning on and on” and will read several short excerpts from the new book, interspersed with fun and interesting conversation with attendees. A book signing will follow.
